Sherwood Leos get a visit from Jasmin, Leader Dog in training

Lions Julie Thomas and Lois Barb, 22-C Leader Dog chair, along with Leader Dog puppy-in-training Jasmin, visited the Sherwood High School Leo Club on February 9, 2015. The Leos learned about both the Leader Dog and puppy raising programs and were able to pet Jasmin while she was “not working.” As a service project to raise money for Leader Dogs, the Sherwood Leos will be selling Valentine flowers all week in the school.  The Sherwood Leo Club is sponsored by the Sandy Spring Lions Club.

September Program: Matt Green, Farquhar Middle School

Last year, Matt Green, a teacher from Farquhar Middle School, came to talk to us about a project he does every year where he takes a group of kids from Farquhar on a trip to the Chesapeake Bay to learn about the ecology of the bay and how their actions have environmental consequences.  He asked us to make a donation to the project that would allow some kids who are less financially well off to attend the trip, which we did.

At our meeting in September, Matt talked to us about how that trip went, showed us pictures, and explained a little about what the kids learned.  He said that this particular trip reinvigorated his interest in continuing the project, and presented the Sandy Spring Lions Club with a beautiful canvas print of the kids on the trip.

Lions Present Student Awards

As part of their continuing recognition of youth service in the community, the Sandy Spring Lions Club recently presented scholarships to deserving students at area schools.

During ceremonies conducted at Sherwood High School and Sandy Spring Friends School, scholarships totaling $4500.00 were presented. Recipients at Sherwood were David Mazzeo and Andrew Krotchko, and Dipesh KC was the recipient at SSFS. The Sherwood awards were presented by Club President Greg Fuller, while the Friends School presentation was made by Past District Governor Bill Thomas.

Scholarships are presented each year to students based on academics, community service, school activities and financial need.

The Sandy Spring club is a part of Lions International, the largest service organization in the world with more than 1.3 million members in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.
