Tonight’s program was presented by Joy Turner from the George and Georgianna Campbell Sandy Spring Slave Museum & African Art Gallery. The museum is located in the Freeman’s Village on Brooke Road in Sandy Spring.
The campus is very interactive. They start with a trip through Africa, with replica structures, African art, textiles, and musical instruments.
The museum continues on to the time of slavery with examples of bondage instruments and farm materials that you are allowed to touch to experience in a tactile way what things might have been like.
It tells the stories of the underground railroad, which it is believed went through Sandy Spring. The story then continues through manumission and emancipation of the local slaves.
The museum also contains a research library and stages free musical presentations.
Tours of the museum are available by appointment.
